It has been a little bit since the last update. Been working steadily in the studio on new works and exhibition works in Joseph Minek & Rachel Hellmann: Touch Faith at the University of Dayton.
Spring break is approaching, meaning I will be able to commit a large amount of time to new works.
Have not made an update in a while. It’s spring break, so I will be in the studio all week. Went to the SPE national conference over the weekend which was great and has my mind racing with new ideas for both the studio as well as teaching.

Summer break started last week and I am trying to get back in my studio schedule. While the past few summer have been strictly dedicated to making Photographic Works, this summer will be a bit different.
The website has been updated with a new series of works titled Odds/Ends, which uses the discarded materials from photographic works, wether it be cut offs, masks, or b-sides collaged together or on their own.
I also have a few other ideas for works / series of works that will hopefully come to fruition.
Below are are a few pieces from Odds/Ends. But before that I have decided to do a flat file sale of some works that will never make it to exhibition, either do to becoming b-sides or having slight flaws. I will be putting those up on my instagram (@josephminek) and on Facebook.
More updates soon.

Below I added some images I have taken while working in the studio. Not sure what will happen with these but it's nice to have some behind the scenes photos.
2018 is shaping up to be a great year. I am getting back into the studio next week but bought I'd share some 2018 news and the final works of 2017
First I'd like to announce that I will be apart of "Much Light! - Contemporary Positions of Abstract Photography" at Galerie Kornfeld in Berlin, Germany. I am so honored to be included in this show with artists I have looked up to and have read about many times. Below is one of the pieces in the exhibition.

The past couple of months have been insanely busy. I am teaching 5 classes at the moment, while getting ready for exhibitions. Below are installation shots of Remnants at Forum ArtSpace in Cleveland Ohio and No Poetic Device at Denny Gallery in New York, open through November 12th. Hoping to get back into the studio to make within the next couple weeks.

Only two more weeks left of summer before teaching begins again. I was able to get in a good amount of studio time before I ran out of both paper and chemistry. Running out of supplies was a good thing, as I can take some time away from making to look at the works, figuring out where to go next while also putting together two upcoming shows. The pieces for those are being mounted now. Below are some of the newer pieces, some are in the shows, some not. Update again once the shows are finalized.

Halfway through summer and the last week has been busy with installing shows. Right now I have a solo show titled Disclosure in Dayton Ohio at INDEX, the University of Daytons project space.
Last week I also dropped off works for Constructions, a group show featuring Barry Underwood, Sarah Kabot, Jerry Birchfield, and myself, at Gallery W, located in the American Greeting Headquarters.

Things have been progressing slowly in the studio. I just finished getting pieces ready for two upcoming shows. While working on those shows, I have also started working on two more shows that will open in the fall.

Summer break started a couple weeks back and let's just say the studio has not gone as planned. Many failures and ran out of big paper, but plan to work on some smaller works. It feels like a transition period right now and I'm excited to see where the work goes over the next couple months.
In other news I have two solo shows happening in July and September, along with a group show in July. I also was featured on boom again:

Only a few more weeks of the semester then back into the studio full force. I am part of an exhibition opening in early July that I need to get pieces ready for, and have some new ideas for that and an upcoming solo show in September. I was able to get into the studio the past couple weekends, mostly working on a commission in New York.

Besides the commission, I have been making some other pieces and seeing new directions that the work can take.

I am going to start taking these and creating large works soon. Stay tuned.
It's spring break and I have been able to get back into the studio to make some pieces. Working was cut short due to running out of paper and it taking much longer than expected for the new roll to get here. This weekend I'll be making more sketches for new pieces while I wait for the paper then full force work mode again.

More to come very soon.
School has been back in session for about a month now and I have been getting into the studio on the weekends to make, while using my time during the week to make sure the archiving of all the pieces is complete (still not done with it.)
I have been making this work for almost 2 years now and have made over 1,000 pieces at this point. That by no means each piece is a keeper. But each one has given me insight into my practice and how these materials function.

Archiving / organizing.
Now it is time to take a break from making for the next month while I go back through these pieces, live with them, and see how they are functioning in relation to my thoughts. Lots of reading and researching more about this paper and the chemicals I use, along with more color theory and expanding on my thoughts.
Thanks for reading.
